Alternative Entertainments began working in 1984 to establish venues in South County Dublin as viable and attractive for high quality fine-art exhibitions and visual arts education projects. Since its first show it has run exhibitions in such diverse venues as shopping centres, community centres, primary and secondary schools, public spaces, social welfare offices, arts centres, a local theatre and housing estates.
In that time it hosted shows by some of the country’s most respected, most celebrated practitioners in the field of visual arts, such as Paddy Graham, Sean MacSweeney, Brian Maguire, Geraldine O’Reilly, Richard Gorman, Collette O’Connell, John Bellany, Nancy Honey, Louise Ward, Tony O’Shea, Dominique Davoust, Imogen Stuart, Pauline Keena and Frank Quinn. The organisation enjoyed the trust and respect of these artists, and its reputation, and the reputation of its primary exhibition space, The Alternative Entertainments Gallery in The Civic Theatre, Tallaght, grew, allowing it to programme more and more for new emerging artists.
The arrival of RUARED arts centre in Tallaght (due in no small measure to Alternative Entertainments’ ceaseless efforts in the region for the past quarter century) affords arts organisations in the area the opportunity to work in a dedicated arts space for the first time. Our aims with regard to visual arts programming are to host high quality exhibitions from emerging and established respected Irish and international artists; to establish partnerships and relationships with exhibiting artists; to host a number of international exhibitions in order to enhance the exhibitions programme and to develop the practice of artists living and working in the region; to produce publications to serve exhibiting artists; to use the exhibitions programme as a focal point for all participatory visual arts activities, providing a locally based visual arts programme committed to excellence and diverse practice; and to provide an opportunity for professional advancement for visual artists based in the region.
In 2009 we publish 25 years of Visual arts with Alternative Entertainments documenting our work in the field. The book is available on our Store page, or as a PDF download here.
